Understanding Allergies and Asthma
Allergy and asthma symptoms in children are very common but could be life threatening without proper health care. At your walk-in appointment, you can request for evaluation and testing of your child’s allergies or asthma concerns. Our medical staff will walk you through the evaluation and testing process. The results and customized plan of care will be discussed with you.
How Do I Know if My Child has Allergies
Symptoms of allergies are the following:
• Sneezing
• Runny nose
• Itching or swelling of the eyes, tongue, or throat
• Dark circles under the eyes
• Persistent coughing
• Wheezing or difficulty breathing
• Skin rash or hives
• Upset stomach, cramps, bloating, or diarrhea
If your child shows any of these symptoms, visit us during our walk-in hours and request allergy testing.
What Triggers Allergies in Children?
• Foods- the most common are peanuts, milk and dairy products, eggs, and shelfish
• Outdoor exposure- grass, plant and tree pollen's, insect bites and stings
• Indoor allergens- dust mites on bedding's and pillows, stuff toys, animal or pet hair and mold
• Irritants- scented candles, aerosol sprays, perfume, cigarette smoke, and car exhaust
What are the Symptoms
of Asthma in Children
• Frequent cough, especially at night
• Shortness of breath
• Wheezing or coughing after exercise
• Whistling sound when exhaling
• Feeling tired, easily upset, grouchy, or moody
• Chest pain especially in children and adolescents
• Trouble sleeping because of coughing
• Coughing attacks that get worse with colds or flu
• Feeling tired or sleepy because of poor sleep
These symptoms can be bothersome and dangerous if left untreated. Asthma symptoms may also cause a lot of sick visits to the doctor or the emergency room, thus leading to frequent school absences. If your child is exhibiting some or all of the above symptoms, visit us for evaluation and treatment of your child.
